What is BYOK (bring your own key)?

The short version, how it works in AI apps, what it costs, and the other meaning of BYOK you'll meet in cloud security.

Definition

BYOK (bring your own key) means using your own API key from an AI provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google inside someone else's app, so requests run on your account and you pay the provider directly for what you use. In cloud security, BYOK means supplying your own encryption keys to a cloud service.

How does BYOK work in AI apps?

An app that supports BYOK doesn't resell AI. It gives you a settings field instead.

  1. You create an API key in the provider's developer console (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google AI Studio, Azure, OpenRouter and so on).
  2. You paste it into the app's settings.
  3. The app sends your prompts to that provider using your key. The provider bills your account per token.
  4. The app maker charges for the app itself, or nothing, but not for the AI usage.

Coding tools made the term common. Editors such as Cursor and Visual Studio Code let you add your own model keys, and routers like OpenRouter let you attach provider keys to your account.

BYOK vs a bundled AI subscription

Neither is always cheaper. Light users often pay less with BYOK because they only pay for the tokens they use. Heavy users of large models can spend more than a flat subscription would cost. Set a monthly spending limit in your provider's billing settings if you're unsure.

What are the pros and cons of BYOK?

Pros: you pick the model, you can switch providers without switching apps, companies can use a key from their approved enterprise account, and with apps that call the provider directly, your prompts don't pass through a middleman's server.

Cons: one more bill to watch, a few minutes of setup, and a key that has to be kept safe. Anyone holding your key can spend your money.

Is BYOK safe?

It's as safe as the place the key is stored. Ask two questions of any BYOK app. Where does the key live, and does it ever leave your device? A desktop app should encrypt it locally. AuraCloak, for example, stores keys encrypted with Windows DPAPI in %APPDATA%\AuraCloak, and prompts go directly from your PC to the provider you chose, with no AuraCloak account and no telemetry. A web app has to hold the key on its servers or in your browser, which is a different trust decision.

Good habits regardless of app: create a separate key per app so you can revoke one without breaking the rest, set a spending cap, and never paste a key into a chat window or a shared document.

What does BYOK mean in cloud security?

Older and unrelated to chatbots. In cloud encryption, BYOK means you generate encryption key material yourself, often in your own hardware security module, and import it into the provider's key management service, such as AWS KMS, Azure Key Vault or Google Cloud KMS. The provider encrypts your data with a key you created and can revoke. If you searched "BYOK meaning" from an IT security context, this is the one you want.

BYOK in AuraCloak

AuraCloak, an always-on-top AI overlay for Windows, supports BYOK for OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Azure OpenAI (resource, deployment and key) and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as Ollama, LM Studio, OpenRouter or vLLM. GitHub Copilot and Gemini can also sign in with OAuth instead of a key. If you'd rather not manage keys at all, browser mode loads ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity with your normal login, so an existing ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription works without an API key.

Bring your own OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or Azure key, or skip keys with browser mode. $9/mo or $49 once.

FAQ

What does BYOK stand for?

BYOK stands for bring your own key. In AI apps it means using your own API key from a provider like OpenAI or Anthropic. In cloud security it means supplying your own encryption keys to a cloud provider's key management service.

Is BYOK cheaper than a ChatGPT subscription?

It depends on how much you use it. With BYOK you pay the provider per token, so light use can cost less than a monthly plan, while heavy use of large models can cost more. Set a spending limit in the provider's billing settings to stay in control.

Where do I get an API key for BYOK?

From the provider's developer console: the OpenAI platform for OpenAI keys, the Anthropic Console for Claude, Google AI Studio for Gemini, or your Azure portal for Azure OpenAI. API usage is billed separately from consumer subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus.

Can someone steal my API key from a BYOK app?

A key is only as safe as where it's stored. Prefer apps that encrypt keys locally and send requests straight to the provider. Use a separate key per app, set spending caps, and revoke a key right away if you think it leaked.
