In Teams, choose Share > Window instead of Screen and keep ChatGPT in a separate window; attendees only see the window you picked. For slides, share the PowerPoint file so Teams shows your notes only to you. If you must share your whole screen, keep ChatGPT on an unshared monitor or in a capture-excluded overlay.
Nobody in a Teams meeting can see your ChatGPT window unless it's part of what you share. That's the whole game. Teams doesn't list your open apps to the organizer, and it doesn't flag that you switched windows. What it does do, if you share your entire screen, is send every pixel on that monitor, ChatGPT included.
Ways to keep ChatGPT open in Teams, compared
| Setup | Works if you share the entire screen? | Needs | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share > Window, ChatGPT in another window | You aren't sharing the screen | Nothing extra | Most meetings |
| PowerPoint Live + ChatGPT beside it | You aren't sharing the screen | A PowerPoint deck | Presentations with Q&A |
| Teams on the web, share a single tab | You aren't sharing the screen | Chrome or Edge | Browser-based demos |
| Second monitor | Yes, share the other monitor | A second display | Desk setups |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot in the meeting | It's a Teams panel, not shared | Copilot license, org meeting | Questions about the meeting itself |
| Capture-excluded overlay | Yes, Windows 10 2004+ | An app such as AuraCloak | Laptops, multi-app demos |
Should you use Copilot in Teams instead?
If your company pays for Microsoft 365 Copilot, try it first for anything about the meeting itself. It can summarize the discussion so far, list action items and answer "what did Priya say about the budget?" from the conversation. Microsoft's documentation adds some conditions that surprise people (Microsoft Support: Use Copilot in Teams meetings):
- Copilot doesn't work in meetings hosted outside your organization, so a call on a customer's tenant leaves you without it.
- To ask about the meeting after it ends, the organizer has to run transcription. With the "only during the meeting" setting, Copilot's answers vanish when the meeting ends.
- Your admin's policies and meeting templates can switch it off.
What Copilot in a meeting isn't built for is the stuff outside the meeting: rewriting a reply to a customer's email, checking a SQL query, or explaining a term you've never heard. That's where people reach for ChatGPT or Claude, and where the methods below come in.
Method 1: Share a window, keep ChatGPT in another
- Open ChatGPT in a separate browser window or in the ChatGPT desktop app. A tab in the same browser window you plan to share doesn't count.
- In the Teams meeting, select Share.
- Under Window, pick the app to present. Microsoft says this shows "just one window, and no notifications or other desktop activity" (Microsoft Support).
- Switch to ChatGPT whenever you need it. Attendees keep seeing the shared app.
Windows 11 shortcut: go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and tick Share any window from my taskbar. During a Teams call, hover any taskbar app and click Share this window. It makes switching the shared window quick enough that you'll stop reaching for "share entire screen" out of laziness.
What goes wrong: pop-up dialogs from the shared app can be missing for viewers, because Teams may treat them as separate windows. If your demo depends on a dialog, share the screen for that part.
Method 2: PowerPoint Live with ChatGPT beside it
This is the one we'd pick for a presentation with a Q&A at the end. Share the PowerPoint file from the Teams share tray instead of the PowerPoint window. Teams renders the slides for attendees and gives you a presenter view with notes and chat that only you see. Your desktop isn't being captured, so ChatGPT can sit in a window next to Teams and nobody gets a glimpse.
- Upload or open the deck in the Teams share tray under PowerPoint Live.
- Put your prepared answers in the speaker notes. They're private in presenter view.
- Keep ChatGPT open in another window for questions you didn't prepare for.
Method 3: Teams on the web, share a single tab
Microsoft supports screen sharing in Teams on the web only in Google Chrome and the latest Microsoft Edge. When the browser asks what to share, pick a tab. ChatGPT can live in a different tab of the same browser and it isn't sent. If you click into the ChatGPT tab, Chrome shows a banner offering to share that tab instead. Ignore it; the original tab stays on the call.
Method 4: A second monitor
Press Win + P, choose Extend, drag ChatGPT to the second display, and share only the first display in Teams. Teams asks which screen to share and captures only that one. Just don't choose Duplicate, and turn on Do Not Disturb so toast notifications don't land on the shared display.
Sharing your whole screen in Teams? AuraCloak keeps ChatGPT or Claude on top and out of the share.
Get AuraCloakMethod 5: ChatGPT or Claude in a capture-excluded overlay
For laptops and for demos that hop between apps, you need the AI window on the same screen you're sharing, without it being in the share. Windows supports exactly that. Since Windows 10 version 2004, an app can set WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE on its own window and Windows leaves it out of every screen capture, including Teams (Microsoft Learn).
AuraCloak is an invisible AI overlay for Windows built on that flag. You can use it two ways:
- Browser mode: pick Browser in the provider dropdown, open chatgpt.com or claude.ai and sign in once. Your ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription works as usual; no API key.
- Your own API key: connect OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, GitHub Copilot or Azure OpenAI. Azure OpenAI is the one to ask IT about if your company only allows AI inside its own Azure tenant.
Setup for a Teams call:
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Space to show the overlay, and size it into a corner.
- Lower the opacity so your slides show through, and press Alt + C if you want clicks to pass to the app underneath.
- Join a test meeting from your phone, share your entire screen in Teams and confirm the overlay isn't on the phone.
- During the call, type your question, or press Alt + V to start voice input and press it again to send. AuraCloak only hears your microphone when you start voice input. It never listens to the Teams call audio.
Know the limits before you rely on it. A phone camera pointed at your screen, a meeting-room projector and a duplicated display all show the overlay, because they're displays, not captures. On Windows 10 builds older than 2004, Teams viewers see a black box where the overlay is. The meetings use case has more setups.
Checklist before the meeting
- Run
winverand confirm Windows 10 version 2004 or later if you'll rely on capture exclusion. - Turn on Do Not Disturb (Windows 11) or Focus assist (Windows 10).
- Decide what you'll share: a window, the PowerPoint file or a monitor.
- Open ChatGPT in its own window or overlay and sign in before the call starts.
- Check your company's AI policy before pasting customer names, contracts or code into a personal ChatGPT account.
- Do a 60-second test share to your phone.
If your company restricts ChatGPT
Plenty of Teams-first companies block chatgpt.com or ban personal AI accounts for work data. That doesn't always mean no AI at all. Ask IT which providers are approved; common answers are Microsoft 365 Copilot, an Azure OpenAI deployment inside the company's own tenant, or GitHub Copilot for engineering teams. AuraCloak can connect to an Azure OpenAI resource and deployment with a key IT gives you, or sign in to GitHub Copilot with your work GitHub account, so the overlay uses the same approved backend as everything else. Prompts go directly from your PC to that provider, and AuraCloak itself has no account, no telemetry and no chat sync. If the answer from IT is "no AI in customer meetings", that's the answer, overlay or not.
FAQ
Can Teams tell that I'm using ChatGPT during a meeting?
No. Teams doesn't show the organizer or attendees which apps you have open, and it doesn't alert anyone when you switch windows. ChatGPT is only visible if it appears in your shared content or on camera. Employer monitoring tools on managed devices are separate from Teams.
Is Copilot in Teams the same as ChatGPT?
No. Microsoft 365 Copilot in Teams meetings answers questions about the meeting from its conversation and needs a Copilot license, and it doesn't work in meetings hosted outside your organization. ChatGPT is a separate general-purpose assistant.
Can I use Claude during a Teams meeting the same way?
Yes. Every method here works for Claude: open claude.ai in a separate window, put it on a second monitor, or load it in a capture-excluded overlay. AuraCloak supports Claude through browser mode or an Anthropic API key.
Does the ChatGPT window show when I share my screen in Teams?
It shows if you share your entire screen and ChatGPT is on that monitor. It doesn't show if you share a single window, a PowerPoint file, or a different monitor.
Is it okay to use ChatGPT in a work Teams meeting?
That depends on your employer's AI policy and the meeting's rules. Many companies allow approved tools only, and you shouldn't paste confidential data into a personal account. Hiding the window from the share doesn't change those rules.
