Pick Otter.ai if you need meeting transcripts, summaries, action items and searchable notes for a team, on any platform. Pick AuraCloak if you want a private AI you can ask anything during a call on Windows, with no bot joining, nothing recorded, your own model or ChatGPT login, and a $49 one-time price. Many people use both. Prices checked October 2026.
Is AuraCloak an Otter.ai alternative?
Only for some people, so let's be straight about it. Otter.ai is a meeting note-taker. Its Notetaker joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet calls (or its desktop app records your computer's audio), transcribes everyone, and turns that into summaries, action items and a searchable archive with AI chat on top.
AuraCloak doesn't record, doesn't transcribe the call and doesn't keep meeting notes. It's an always-on-top AI chat window for Windows that's excluded from screen capture. During a call you can ask it anything: paste a screenshot of a slide, ask what a term means, draft an answer to a hard question. Nobody else on the call sees a bot, and nothing about the meeting is stored.
So the people who should switch are the ones who adopted Otter for the wrong job. If what you actually wanted was live help, not a transcript, AuraCloak fits better. If you want the transcript, Otter wins and this page will tell you so.

How we compared
We make AuraCloak and we'd like you to buy it, but not if you need a transcript. Otter's details come from otter.ai and otter.ai/pricing, read on October 11, 2026. User complaints come from review sites and the discussions they quote; we found few recent first-hand Reddit threads, so we say where sources are secondhand.
Why people look for Otter alternatives
"Otter ai alternatives" gets about 390 US searches a month, and the reasons repeat. The loudest one is the bot. Otter's Notetaker can join calls from your calendar automatically, and people have described it showing up in client calls or HR conversations because someone forgot it was on. Others complain that Otter sent invitations to their meeting guests. Changing the auto-join settings fixes most of this, and Otter's desktop app and Chrome extension record without a bot at all, which plenty of users don't know.
The second reason is limits. The free Basic plan stops each conversation at 30 minutes and keeps only your 25 most recent conversations. Pro allows 90 minutes per conversation, and users with two-hour meetings say so loudly.
Neither problem applies to AuraCloak, for the simple reason that AuraCloak doesn't record meetings. That's the honest framing: you aren't trading for a better note-taker, you're dropping the note-taker.
Want live AI help on calls with no bot and no recording? AuraCloak is $49 once on Windows.

Otter is priced per user; AuraCloak per license. A full breakdown of Otter's plans, including the India-card discount and student pricing, is in our Otter.ai pricing guide.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otter Basic | Free | Free | 300 min/month, 30 min per conversation |
| Otter Pro | $16.99/user | $8.33/user/month | 1,200 min/month, 90 min per conversation |

| Otter Enterprise | Custom | SSO, SCIM, HIPAA add-on | |
| AuraCloak | $9 | $49 once (lifetime) | AI usage paid to your provider, or $0 extra in browser mode |
Otter's price includes its AI. AuraCloak's doesn't: you bring an API key, sign in with Google for Gemini or GitHub for Copilot, or run ChatGPT and Claude.ai in browser mode with the subscription you already pay for.
Privacy: recording vs not recording
Any meeting recorder raises a consent question, because it captures other people's voices. That's Otter's job, and its Enterprise plan adds governance controls to manage it.
AuraCloak sidesteps the question. It has no account, no telemetry and no chat sync. Voice input is your own microphone, started with Alt+V, and you can run it through Local Whisper so the audio never leaves your PC. Prompts go straight from your computer to the AI provider you chose. The window itself is excluded from Windows screen capture, so when you share your screen in Zoom or Teams, the overlay isn't in the share. A phone camera pointed at your monitor would still see it, and so would a hardware capture card.
Can you use Otter and AuraCloak together?
Yes, and for a lot of people it's the best setup. Let Otter (or your team's note-taker) handle the record. Keep AuraCloak open for the live part: a customer asks about an integration, you press Alt+S, ask "does this config support SSO?", and read the answer while you keep talking. Afterwards, Otter has the transcript and AuraCloak has kept nothing. Our meetings use case shows more of that workflow.

FAQ
Is AuraCloak a meeting note-taker like Otter?
No. AuraCloak doesn't record, transcribe or summarize meetings. It's a private AI chat overlay for Windows that answers questions you type, paste or speak into your own microphone during a call. If you need transcripts, Otter is the right tool.
Does Otter.ai join meetings as a bot?
Otter's Notetaker can join Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet calls as a participant. Otter also has Mac and Windows desktop apps and a Chrome extension that record your computer's audio without a bot.
Is Otter.ai free?
Otter's Basic plan is free with 300 transcription minutes a month, a 30-minute cap per conversation, 3 lifetime file imports and your 25 most recent conversations, checked October 2026.
Can other people on the call see AuraCloak?
Not through screen sharing. AuraCloak uses the Windows WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE flag, so Zoom, Teams, Meet in a browser and OBS leave it out. A phone camera pointed at your screen would still see it.
Can I use Otter and AuraCloak at the same time?
Yes. Otter records and summarizes the meeting, and AuraCloak gives you private answers during it. They don't conflict.
