ShadeCoder alternative: AuraCloak vs ShadeCoder compared

ShadeCoder is a coding interview copilot: press a hotkey, it reads the problem from a screenshot and returns a structured solution. AuraCloak does the screenshot-to-answer loop too, as a general Windows overlay, with your choice of model and a $49 lifetime price.

Short answer

Pick ShadeCoder if you want a purpose-built coding interview tool on Mac or Windows with a free tier of 5 credits a month and structured solutions out of the box. Pick AuraCloak if you're on Windows and want screenshot-to-answer with the model you choose (Claude, GPT, Gemini, GitHub Copilot or local), no account and a $49 lifetime license instead of $699. Checked October 2026.

ShadeCoder vs AuraCloak at a glance

Both apps share a core move: hit a hotkey, capture the screen, get an answer in a floating window. The differences are price, models and scope.

How we compared

We make AuraCloak. ShadeCoder's details come from shadecoder.com, read October 11, 2026 (its /pricing URL returned a 404; prices are from the homepage). We haven't benchmarked ShadeCoder's answer quality ourselves.

ShadeCoder pricing vs AuraCloak pricing

This is the biggest gap on the page. ShadeCoder's lifetime plan is $699. AuraCloak's is $49.

PlanPriceCost for 3 months of use
ShadeCoder Free$0, 5 credits/month$0
ShadeCoder Pro Weekly$39/weekAbout $507 (13 weeks)
ShadeCoder Pro Monthly$69/month$207
ShadeCoder Lifetime$699 once$699
AuraCloak Monthly$9/month$27
AuraCloak Lifetime$49 once$49

To be fair about what's in the box: ShadeCoder's paid plans include unlimited AI credits. AuraCloak doesn't include AI usage. You pay your provider per request, which for occasional screenshot questions to a model like Claude or GPT is usually small, or use GitHub Copilot sign-in if your employer already pays for Copilot. Browser mode adds zero-extra-cost use of a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro login. Check the pricing page for plan details.

Why picking your own model matters for code

Coding answers vary a lot by model, and the best model changes every few months. ShadeCoder doesn't say which one you're getting. With AuraCloak, you pick and you can switch mid-conversation from the overlay: Claude for a long refactor explanation, a GPT model for a quick regex, a local Ollama model when the code can't leave your machine.

The GitHub Copilot option is the one most developers miss. Sign in with GitHub and AuraCloak uses the Copilot subscription you already have. No API key, no extra bill.

Screenshot a stack trace, ask Claude or Copilot, keep it off the screen share. $49 once.

What the screenshot loop looks like day to day

Picture a pair-programming call on Teams. You're sharing your IDE. A test fails with a 40-line stack trace. Press Alt+S, type "why does this fail", and the answer appears in an overlay that Teams leaves out of the share. Your teammate sees your editor. You see the explanation.

That's the same loop ShadeCoder sells, aimed at everyday engineering work instead of interviews. AuraCloak also takes pasted images (Ctrl+V), drag-and-drop images, text files and PDFs, so you can drop in a design doc and ask questions about it. Click-through mode (Alt+C) lets you keep the overlay over your editor while typing into the editor underneath.

The limits we always state: a phone camera sees the overlay, remote desktop and hardware capture cards aren't covered, and Windows builds before 2004 show a black box. Full detail in our guide to hiding a window from screen share.

Interview rules

ShadeCoder's marketing centers on live coding interviews. Most companies forbid outside help in those rounds. We'd use either tool to practice problems and review your solutions, not during the interview itself.

Setting up the screenshot loop in AuraCloak

  1. Install AuraCloak (about a 50 MB self-contained installer) and enter your license key on first launch.
  2. Pick a provider. The quickest for developers is GitHub Copilot: sign in with GitHub and you're done. Otherwise paste an OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key, which is stored encrypted with Windows DPAPI.
  3. Set a system prompt that matches how you work, for example "You are a senior engineer. Answer in under 10 lines unless I ask for more. Show code first."
  4. Press Alt+S to capture all monitors, or Alt+Shift+1 to 9 for one monitor, then type your question.
  5. Lower the opacity and turn on click-through (Alt+C) so the answer sits over your editor without blocking it.

Every hotkey can be changed in auracloak.ini if it clashes with your IDE. If your screenshots are large (a 4K monitor, say), turn on JPEG compression so uploads stay quick.

The whole setup takes a few minutes, and you can change providers later without reinstalling anything.

What users say

Independent reviews of ShadeCoder are thin, and most of what ranks is written by competitors (one rival reviewer said ShadeCoder struggled on their LeetCode tests and that the overlay is semi-transparent). ShadeCoder's own blog quotes happy Reddit users. Neither side is neutral. The free 5-credit tier is the honest way to judge it.

Who should choose ShadeCoder, and who should choose AuraCloak

Choose ShadeCoder if:

  • You want a tool built only for coding problems, with structured solutions and follow-up explanations.
  • You use a Mac.
  • Five free credits a month covers what you need.
  • You want AI usage bundled and don't care which model runs.

Choose AuraCloak if:

  • You're on Windows and $699 for a lifetime license is hard to justify.
  • You want to choose the model, or use GitHub Copilot or a local model.
  • You want voice input and file attachments, not just screenshots.
  • You'll use it for daily engineering work and meetings.
