Real-time AI interview assistants: how they work, what they cost, and the risks

A real-time AI interview assistant listens to a job interview and suggests answers while it's happening. Here's the pipeline behind every one of them, the prices we could confirm in October 2026, and the employer rules that decide whether you should use one at all.

Short answer

A real-time AI interview assistant, also called an interview copilot, captures a live interview's audio, transcribes the questions and shows AI-suggested answers in a private window. Prices run from limited free tiers to $299 a month (checked October 2026). Many employers prohibit hidden live help, so follow the interviewer's rules.

What is a real-time AI interview assistant?

It's a desktop app or browser tool that follows a job interview as it happens and suggests what to say next. The names blur together. Final Round AI calls its version the Interview CoPilot, Verve AI sells an "AI interview copilot", Sensei AI describes itself as hands-free, and "live interview AI" and "real-time AI interview copilot" both get searched every month. They describe the same product.

The category went mainstream in 2025, when Interview Coder's creators were suspended by Columbia University and went on to found Cluely. Since then a dozen companies have shipped a version, most of them bundled with resume tools and mock interviews.

Keep one distinction in mind while you read vendor pages. A mock interview tool asks you questions so you get better at answering. A real-time copilot answers questions for you during the real thing. Several products do both, and the marketing rarely separates them. Our guide to AI interview prep tools covers the first kind; this page explains the second.

How does a real-time AI interview copilot work?

Every product we looked at runs the same five stages: capture the call's audio, turn speech into text, decide when a question has been asked, send that question with your resume to a large language model, and stream the answer into an overlay window. Desktop versions also ask the operating system to leave that window out of screen sharing.

StageWhat happensWhere it goes wrong
1. Audio captureThe app records your computer's audio output (what the interviewer says), sometimes your microphone too. Browser versions capture a tab's audio.Wrong output device, Bluetooth headsets, a bad connection
2. TranscriptionA streaming speech-to-text model turns audio into text in short chunksNames, jargon, accents, two people talking at once
3. Question detectionA model decides the interviewer has finished asking somethingMulti-part questions, small talk treated as a question
4. Answer generationA large language model gets the question plus your resume, the job description and any instructions, then streams a replyGeneric or overlong answers, wrong facts about you
5. DisplayAn always-on-top, often semi-transparent window shows the answer, usually near the webcamReading is visible on camera
6. Capture exclusionOn Windows, SetWindowDisplayAffinity with WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE; on macOS, the NSWindow sharingType propertyPhones, capture cards, remote desktop, in-person rounds

Picture how that plays out. The interviewer asks a two-part question about a project that slipped and what you'd change. The transcript arrives a beat late, the detector fires after part one, and the model starts answering half the question. By the time the second half is in, you've been silent for several seconds or you've started talking without it. That loop is why latency is the number vendors compete on. Verve AI claims under 300 ms. Users tell a messier story: a post on ParakeetAI's own feedback board is titled "Severe Lag and Unresponsiveness", and Final Round AI's Trustpilot reviewers mention delays and answers too long to read in the moment.

Context is the other big variable. A model that only hears the question writes an answer anyone could give. That's why Final Round AI builds "Goals" from your resume and the job description, ParakeetAI lets you upload a resume or playbook, and LockedIn AI's positive reviews mention STAR-format answers based on the uploaded resume. Even with that context, generic answers are among the most common complaints across the category.

Stage 6 is the one vendors brand as "stealth mode". It's a documented operating system feature, and we explain the Windows side in WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE explained and both platforms in how invisible AI apps work. Microsoft's own documentation says the flag isn't a security feature and won't stop a photo of the screen. All it does is leave a window out of screen shares and recordings. It does nothing about what an interviewer actually watches, which is the candidate.

How much does a real-time AI interview assistant cost?

Most interview copilots charge $25 to $90 a month, with yearly plans that bring the monthly rate down to about $24 and outliers such as Interview Coder at $299 a month. Several hide prices until checkout. Here's what we could confirm, read from each vendor's site between October 11 and 14, 2026.

Monthly price hides the real number, which is what one job search costs. Most searches last a few months. Three months of Sensei AI on monthly billing is $267, Beyz AI's monthly plan is about $150, and Interview Coder's is $897. Annual plans look cheaper per month but lock you in long after the search ends, and refund terms are strict: LockedIn AI's policy, as summarized in September 2026, makes monthly and quarterly plans non-refundable once started. Our reviews of Final Round AI, LockedIn AI, ParakeetAI and Interview Coder go plan by plan.

What are the risks of using an AI interview copilot?

The biggest risk is breaking the employer's rules. Amazon's internal recruiter guidance, reported by Business Insider in 2025, asks candidates not to use generative AI during interviews "unless explicitly permitted" and says breaking that may mean disqualification. Anthropic's candidate guidance (updated July 10, 2025) allows AI to refine an application you drafted yourself but says live interviews get "no AI assistance unless we indicate otherwise." Goldman Sachs told campus recruits in 2025 that it prohibits external sources, ChatGPT included, during interviews. Google has said it's bringing back at least one in-person round for some roles. We collected these in are AI interview assistants allowed?

Follow the interviewer's rules

Many employers prohibit hidden AI help during live interviews and assessments, and some ask candidates to confirm it in writing. If the rules aren't clear, ask the recruiter before the interview. Using AI to prepare is a different question, and almost every employer is fine with it.

The other risks are less dramatic and more common.

Reading shows. Interviewers notice a pause before every answer, eyes moving across the screen and answers that sound like a written document. Amazon's guidance reportedly names exactly those signs. An answer you can't expand on also falls apart at the first follow-up, and good interviewers always follow up.

You'd be hired for a version of yourself that doesn't exist. If the role needs you to explain a design decision on the spot, the job will ask you to do it every week, without a copilot.

Someone else's voice goes to a server. These tools send the interviewer's speech to a third-party service for transcription. California and several other US states require every party's consent to record a confidential conversation. Whether live transcription counts as recording is a legal question we can't answer for you, but it's one more reason to ask first.

Billing. Final Round AI's Trustpilot score was 2.9 out of 5 in October 2026, mostly over refunds, and LockedIn AI's rating was withheld by Trustpilot after it removed fake reviews. Read the refund page before you pay, whatever you choose.

Where does AuraCloak fit?

AuraCloak isn't an interview copilot, and we built it that way on purpose. It's an always-on-top AI chat overlay for Windows that you open with Ctrl+Alt+Space and ask things. It never hears the call. Voice input is your own microphone, started and sent with Alt+V, so nothing runs unless you trigger it. Alt+S attaches a screenshot of your screen. Windows leaves the window out of Zoom, Teams and Google Meet shares, the same capture exclusion described above, and we publish the limits (phones, capture cards, remote desktop).

The model is yours to pick. Bring a key for OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini or Azure OpenAI, sign in with GitHub Copilot, point it at a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, or use browser mode with the ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro login you already pay for.

For interviews, that makes it a prep workspace. Paste the job description into the custom system prompt, ask it to play a hiring manager, and answer out loud with push-to-talk; with the Local Whisper voice engine, your practice audio never leaves the PC. The interview prep use case has a full mock interviewer prompt, and our 36 ChatGPT prompts for interview prep work in it unchanged. Outside job searches, people use it in meetings, sales calls and code reviews, which is where a $49 one-time license makes more sense than a monthly copilot.

A private AI window for prep and everyday calls, with the model you choose. $9 a month or $49 once.

What it doesn't do: no automatic question detection, no answer suggestions while someone else is talking, no mock interview scoring, no Mac app. If those are what you want, our side-by-sides with Final Round AI, Verve AI, ParakeetAI and Sensei AI show where each fits.

Should you use a real-time AI interview assistant?

Our rule of thumb is simple. If an employer explicitly allows AI during an interview, pick a tool on price, platform and refund terms; nothing on this page argues against that. If you don't know, ask the recruiter in writing. And if the goal is to get better at interviewing, a copilot is the wrong tool, because it practices for you. Spend the money on AI mock interview practice instead, or compare the whole field in the best AI interview assistants.

FAQ

What is a real-time AI interview assistant?

It's software that follows a live job interview, transcribes the interviewer's questions and shows AI-suggested answers in a window only the candidate sees. Vendors also call it an interview copilot. Final Round AI, LockedIn AI, Verve AI, Parakeet AI, Sensei AI and Beyz AI all sell versions of it.

Is there a free real-time AI interview assistant?

Only with tight limits. In October 2026 Verve AI's free plan had 3 copilot sessions of 15 minutes a month, Sensei AI's free plan had 15-minute sessions, and ParakeetAI offered one free 10-minute session. Final Round AI's free plan covers preparation only.

Can interviewers tell if you use an AI interview assistant?

Often, yes. Hiding a window from screen sharing doesn't hide the candidate. Amazon's recruiter guidance, as reported in 2025, lists signs such as typing while being asked a question, appearing to read, and wandering eyes, and follow-up questions expose answers the candidate can't explain.

Do AI interview copilots work with Zoom and Microsoft Teams?

Most vendors list Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, and several add Webex and Amazon Chime. Desktop apps capture the computer's audio output, so they don't depend on a meeting app integration. Browser versions usually capture a tab's audio instead.

Does AuraCloak listen to interview audio?

No. AuraCloak never captures call audio or answers on its own. Voice input is your own microphone, started and sent with Alt+V. It's a general AI overlay for Windows, used for preparation, notes, meetings and coding.
